Bill, I understand about not making the blade a tight fit in the slot - hence my question about sand between the axle and sides on Bryan's pic.

Not sure I agree with you about the natural forces helping the skegs stay straight. Imagne paddling in a crosswind with Bryan's design, in a kayak where the skeg is helping to prevent weathercocking. There will be sideways pressure on the skeg. The centre of lateral resistance of the skeg is behind the axle. The axle is a tightish fit in the skeg box, the skeg isn't. So the skeg would want to pivot about the axle - and end up steering you into the wind, which is precisely what you are trying to avoid. Hence my questions...

(Sure, it won't end up at much of an angle, but every little hinders.)

As per other replies, I think using the bungee to counteract sideways movement has good benefits.
