Sea legs are more common in people who are good at resisting sea sickness.
It's probably something to do with your balance system adapting well to the
motion being good for avoiding seasickness, but the more adapted you get,
the more the adaptation carries on after you get out of the environment.

I tend to get out of the boat and feel fine, then drive home (typically four
to seven hours from Scottish trips) then notice the sea legs once I get out
of the car. It's not just sea trips - I get sealegs after whitewater trips
occasionally, too, typical onset five to eight hours after getting off the
water, and usually occurs when I want to watch something static like TV, a
monitor screen, or a good book !

Best tip for avoiding seasickness - don't go below decks ! If you are high up
on the boat, the motion tends to be side to side, whilst below decks it's more
of a rotation with less noticeable acceleration side to side. This seems to
be considerably more nauseating. Of course, being able to see the horizon is
most useful, so in a kayak, very few people get sick, but on the ferry to
get somewhere (Outer Hebrides springs to mind...) its much more common.

Oh yes, if you must be below decks because the weather is heinous, just get stuck into a big greasy breakfast. That usually works wonders :-)
