Some people do use SOF boats in whitewater. I don't, so I can't speak from experience. But I'd say that big water class 3 might be OK, but typical shallow, rocky, class 3 might be a problem. Rocks aren't so good for many home built kayaks - either strip, SOF or Luan plywood! Plastic is usually your best bet for most river kayaks, and you can get used ones pretty cheap, especially the bigger, older, "obsolete" types.

A Yost inflatable might work - lots of people use inflatables, whether rafts or duckies, without puncturing them on rocks. You might ask him what he thinks.
