Hi Don,
Either will do fine. Priming with a specific primer is not needed, just thin the first coat so it soaks in and let it dry, 5 to 10% thinner works. If there's any 'fur' after the paint dries, give it a very light hand-sanding then on to the next coat. Follow the re-coat timing on the instructions and use many light coats rather than a few heavy coats,it is less likely to form cracks later.
On the hull, so this until the cloth weave is hidden, 4-7 coats should do. The deck can use less coats as long as it's waterproofed.
