Or you can use a varnish that does not require sanding between coats to build up multiple protective layers. The one I use is Epiphanes Rapid Clear. It does not dry to a gloss, so then I sand and add a few layers of high gloss. I also roll on the varnish with a foam roller and tip off with a three inch foam brush. This way you get pretty even layers and are not as likely to miss spots.
