Yes, 18" is pretty narrow. I actually rounded up on that number, though . . . .
But it is effortless to paddle, and should be easy as pie to roll.

I was shooting for a minimalist (in almost every sense) boat. Perimeter lines do have their purpose, but I'll just have to be judicious and hope I never really need them. I, too, have had the local kayak club leaders look askance at their lack (on other boats of mine) - even while at little seminars on a pond! This is hardly an expedition boat, in any case.

As for bulkheads, well, float bags and possibly a sea sock make those unnecessary.

Anyway, here's a pic of my not-so-minimalist cockpit coaming. The "LC" tacked at the end of "Sea Rover" stands for "long cockpit." It makes getting in and out a lot easier in this tiny boat. The keyhole makes for good thigh bracing, too, and a nice place for a bit of inlay.
