: As a minor aside, Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) is actually a member of
: the cypress family and is not a true cedar.

: Whatever the scientific truth is, as far as I'm concerned it is the One True
: Cedar and the rest are just jealous wannabees. Yes, growing up in the
: northwest US just may have colored my feelings in the matter.

Western red cedar is certainly great stuff and my second favorite wood to work with.

But the real stuff, northern white cedar, is unmatched for boat building. Bends, mills, and looks like no other. Northern white cedar is why there were canoes.

I've cut down my own trees, built docks, built furniture and boats from it.
I guess growing up in the northeast US and Canada has also colored my feeling about this most wonderful wood.

But please stick to WRC, that leaves more NWC for me!
