Dyes can make wood look really nice. It's a good detail. I did some tests on fade resistance with TransTint dyes last summer, and I posted the results on the forum a while back. There should be some good information for you there. You can get an idea of the colors available on the Homestead Finishes web site. They have samples of all of their colors on curly maple. You may want to consider using an alcohol-based dye, though, so that it doesn't raise the grain.
