Have to remember too that once the boat is done, not many people will get close enough to ever see the staple holes.

I used I think "elmers" water based wood filler to fill my holes and while you can see them it's certainly not easy. It takes a bit more time to figure out colors if you have mulitple woods. Red oak color filler seems to hide red cedar holes pretty well.
