: Epifanes recommends their monourethane topsides paint. It's got the best
: abrasion resistance, sticks to nylon, and is relatively flexible.
: Interlux's tech people are no help at all, so I can't help you there.
: Rustoleum also makes a marine topsides paint that some people use.

: There are a couple of things to keep in mind- Zar is nothing like Corey's
: goop. There simply isn't any comparison. Corey's stuff will make your boat
: into something like a rubber skin, like a rubber glove. And Zar won't
: stick to nylon. It will only stick to itself when used on nylon. That's a
: problem. It also gets stiffer as it ages. Zar has been used on TONS of
: boats, but the durability isn't the same as goop.

: You should do a cost analysis over the course of 10 years. 10 years in not
: unreasonable to expect for a boat coated with Corey's goop. Zar has a 3-4
: year lifespan, and people who use their boats a lot post on the Qajaq USA
: web site that they reskin every year. Add up the cost of nylon and Zar
: over the same period and see what's cheaper. Be sure to include shipping
: charges.

: Also, I'd like to point out a logic flaw here. Corey's goop is NOTHING like
: hardware store poly or marine paints. It's a misnomer that they share the
: same name. They're not the same thing at all. It would only be a valid
: comparison to Zar or marine polys if they were the same. Setting that
: aside, if the object is to buy locally, why would you order nylon from
: Corey, pay the shipping, and not get his goop? If the overall object is to
: buy locally, shouldn't you use locally available skin materials? You may
: be better off using cotton canvas if you're going to use Zar. Zar will
: stick to canvas, and is a better match for canvas because canvas is less
: flexible, like the zar. Canvas is still the norm in Greenland, and there
: are users in Europe who build boats with amazing skins of canvas. If it's

: Lastly- if you really want to use goop- have your dad call Spiritline and
: talk to Corey. Corey is a big talker and quite persuasive. It's always
: best to talk to the manufacturers when you are going to use their product.
: After you talking to Corey, talk to the tech people of the manufacturer of
: whichever coating you decide on and compare notes. If it's simply a cost
: issue- while you have Corey on the line, ask him about the 8.5oz
: tight-weave nylon and whether it will hold up. It only takes one kit of
: goop. You'll save on nylon costs and goop costs.

: Good Luck! Be sure to post photos of your boat!

My dad is weird like that. i told him that i would still be buying nylon online, and he just said "some things you have to get online, some you don't. I will see if there is a way to email corey, as calling would be long distance. I will also ask about the 8.5oz nylon's durability.
