Btw, there are better foams for this, but not as cheap. Do a web search for boatbuilding core materials. I've used divinicell foam blocks before for this process, works pretty well and is much easier to carve too. These foams have much better impact strengths.

If you do use styrofoam and hot wire it, do it with lots of ventilation, the gasses produced are toxic.
