I've had the same experience, but it could be an illusion for we usually paddle backwards near shore or obstructions. Just like when we come in forwards the shore seems to approach more rapidly as one gets closer. However, there's also a story, I think I read it on John Winter's site, of a racing yacht (swede form?) that in hull tests, was found to go faster backwards than forwards.
