From what I know, balsa is very dry, I think that
: a coat of epoxy will give it strength and protection.

Although this is a bummer of a set back, if it does not work and breaks then you are wasting money on skin and coating. Skin and coating tends to be the most expensive part of a boat, so it seems to be quite the risk. Now if you had a ribbed yak, then it MIGHT seem to be an option. Yosts need strong stringers and keels (thats why they are 1 inch opposed to 3/4 inch), so you are putting greater risk of failure due to the design you are using.
