You should have used the heat gun everywhere, but done is done. Now, it depends a bit on where the tears are. If they are in places that you can link in a pattern you could inlay a decorative feature instead of simply trying to fill it up. You can do that with veneer, or even fill up and put a picture printed on rice paper (with permanent dyes) over it. Be inventive and create a virtue out of necessity.
