SOF frames survive because they have flex that absorbs external forces.
Wood that can tolerate a lot of flex has long grain structure. There are a lot of species that will do that but, I don't think balsa is one of them. SOF frames can be built from a variety of common types of wood. It can even be scrap wood. Why go down the balsa road at all?
