Know what you mean about the eye. I surf fished through a cat1 on the NC Outer Banks years ago. Wind and rain blowing like mad in my face, then absolute calm and stars in the sky. 30 minutes later, blowing like mad again against my back. The drum were biting though. My wife is still mad.
