6 layers of 4 oz (or more) will give you a nice stiff lip or coaming. You can make it black with some graphite in the mix. Most builders are using the carbon fiber for the beautiful weave pattern it produces more than it's strength. Obviously commercial kayak manufacturers build lips and coamings out of glass.

Don't forget, a glass layup won't reach it full hardness or stiffness for quite a few days.
