Kyle,
Tint each coat. The first coat will use a lot of varnish as it is the coat that is absorbed into the cloth. I use a 2" brush and work the varnish into the skin. this is the coat that bonds with the skin so don't be gentle. Normally, varnish is flowed on and paint is worked back and forth with a brush, but this requires working the varnish with a brush into the skin. It will be a bit blotchy as the nylon will absorb differently where the cloth is tensioned diferrently around the hull. It will even out as more coats are applied. 2 coats will waterproof the skin, but you need more to fill the weave in the cloth to get a smoother hull. 5 or 6 will usually do the trick. Good luck.

: Now on to a few other questions: I plan to use ZAR to paint the hull. When do
: I add the coloring to it? I purchased a small tube of yellow oil paint as
: suggested by Dave Gentry, and did not know whether to add the yellow color
: all at once, or in stages? What should I use to apply the paint to the
: nylon skin (brush, foam brush, epoxy type scraper)? And how many coats of
: paint do I need to properly seal the kayak?
: Guess that's all for now.
: Thanks again to all for the quick help and educational replies!
