: Skin-on-frame kayak - haven't seen anyone using kevlar cloth instead of the
: usual nylon/canvas etc. Any reason why not, other than cost?

I've never seen it in a form that would be fine enough cloth to sew, and I think that's the main drawback. Even satin-weave 4 oz. fabric would be so open there is no way you could hold any tension when you sewed the seam. It's really intended for lamination. If you could find some that was fine enough with a tight enough weave to sew it you'd still have to consider cost as a factor, and what would be the benefit? Its abrasion resistance would only come into play if you wore through the coating you put on it, and if you did that you'd loose your waterproofness and have to recoat it anyway. For the cost, I can't think of any benefits that would make it a better performer than its rivals.
