Whatever you choose to do to hold the ferrule on the shaft, first treat the wood so it won't absorb water and expand.
I'd sand it rough, let it dry out real good, and then let the wood soak all the epoxy it wants to. Then glue the ferrule (sanded rough inside) on with epoxy.
I did mine before fully understanding the wicked way water will reach the wood and make it expand, cracking whatever is around it. Cracks ain't pretty, harmless as they may otherwise be...
