Paddling a 14 1/2 foot canoe along with other canoes (one 17 feet and the other 18 feet) and an 18 foot kayak for 50 miles in the Boundary Waters convinced me I want a longer canoe. The kayak was the speediest boat of our group. My canoe was the slowest.
Could we all stay together? Sure. The potential difference in speed between canoes was probably 1/2 to 1 mph. With a day of 10 to 15 miles, and no one hurrying, it was just a few minutes beween boats.
Was it a fun trip? Yes.
Did I win any races? No.
What boat did everyone want to paddle? Mine. It was the lightest to portage (about 30 pounds lighter than any of the others), and the kayaker found it the most suitable for solo fishing.
The Boundary Waters are a series of lakes. Some wind to consider, but we had no currents to deal with. For paddling up a river I'd prefer a narrower boat.
Of course, to get the displacement I'd need, it would have to be a longer boat.
