Fred,
Obstacles shouldn't be a problem as long as you can teach Lucky to scout them for you. I'm thinking one bark for left and two for right.
I'm curious how you plan to get enough displacement from a 16' boat. A large cockpit might just be your best bet as it will allow you to make adjustments for trim, switch seats with Lucky, and maybe even paddle solo.
