As stated, don't get too close to sheer lines as you move towards the ends of the boat. As for strength, we always double or triple reinforce the inside of the deck where hatches are with extra pieces of glass a little larger than the actual hatch before cutting out. This reinforces area of deck in which you have cut into and also prevents hatch lid from possible warping down the road.
