Hi-
A low-angle block plane is essential, and you'll love it if you're able to keep it sharp. So in addition to whatever everyone says, you absolutely must get sharpening equipment along with any tools. If you don't your tools will be useless.
My best advice is to do some research on sharpening methods on the Fine Woodworking web site, which is a subscription site that will give you a free 2-week trial. When it comes to tool selection, they have a lot of reviews for every tool under the sun. There are also articles for finding things on the cheap-like buying used tools. There's even a lot of great info on doing inlay work. It's the same on a boat as on a table.
Personally- I use abrasive on glass with a honing guide. I used to use water stones, but they're too much hassle keeping them flat and wet and clean, and water stones are EXPENSIVE. You'd be better off buying a better honing guide and using abrasive other than the other way around.
good luck-
