I use good old brown packing tape. The cheaper stuff is better: it doesn't stick too well to wood.
A utility knife blade is good for scraping small spots. Use a pair of pliers to snap the last eighth of an inch off the points and touch the ends of the blade on a belt sander if you are concerned about catching a corner on flat ply.
