A Siskiwit Bay builder from Texas was using 1.5" strips for the hull of the kayak. From the pictures, it looked to work out for him. I haven't seen the finished kayak yet. I have no doubt that on the Black Pearl or an Iggy, using a wider strip would work just fine and be much faster. Plus, you'd needn't use bead and coves, because they fit together just fine on the flat sides.

The image below is of my Iggy without bead and cove. It saved time when I ripped the strips. I think wider strips would have looked nice with the dye. The knee bump would have been very hard to pull off with wider strips. It was hard with 3/4 strips.
