You guys might be interested in this article from a couple years ago where an Australian outfit started making Epic V10 surfskis under a different name, with *very* few changes. http://www.surfski.info/content/view/304/147/
It is especially rampant in the Olympic K1 sprint boat designs.. There are countless companies around the world (Europe especially, but all over) that copy classic or proven popular designs. They even name them with the same naming conventions.. same with wing paddles. Of course, with the ICF rules being 520cm maximum length and width now limited only to what a person can squeeze inside, plus the hull can have no concavity... so there are only so many different shapes that can come out of that. 'Unlimited' boats like surfskis show bigger differences in the hull designs, but would hardly be considered radical differences (Maybe the Think Legend would be...). Most are about 21' and 17" wide, pretty round, high CP, have rudder about in the same spot, etc.
Anyways, if you are taking lines (or general dimensions) off a boat that you know well and understand the stability/handling/comfort of, that's a smart thing. Then change the lines to improve it, make it fit you better, make it faster, etc. It certainly isn't right to make a female mold off a hull and start making and/or selling copies. I studied my commercial K1 and my surfskis hard before coming up with brand new lofted lines that combined qualities from them all and hopefully improve them and give me a boat that performs in my local conditions better than either...
