Hi Bryan,
I've never used the Twitter service you mentioned before but wanted to know if you are aware of the SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker? It's only about the size of a pack of cigarettes and costs $150 plus the $150 subscription service per year. The two Ausies who paddled the 2000mi crossing to New Zealand used it and incorporated it into their website so that you could immediately see where they were via Google Earth - and you could zoom in or out for larger or smaller scale (typical G-Earth feature.) It updates your GPS location every ten minutes and connects you to relevant 911 emergency services. This year's August issue of Sea Kayaker reviewed it- www.findmespot.com.
Now let's see... with the lap top, VHS, GPS, PLB, and now the SPOT you will need to tow a seperate kayak loaded with batteries...
