Sewing the skin to the cockpit baseplate works very well. I can get the skin tighter than stapling it, though it is a more tedious process. As you can see on my Yost Sea Rover cockpit, I screwed the coaming directly to the baseplate. As mentioned, a layer of silicon in between them keeps out the water when you a practicing your rolls.

This keyhole works very well for me, allowing me and my bad knee to get in the boat easily, and providing a solid base for foam thigh bracing. The coaming is supported by the fore and aft frames, and by an intermediary brace epoxied to the chines, which you can just make out in the pic.

The seat slats, btw, were cut from the sides of a RWC 2x4, and are flexible enough that they are the only seat I need - no padding required - keeping my COG pretty low.
