That is what I prefer to use, but it's also possible to use liquid paints. The artist's paints have the advantage of being easy to handle and they're available in a very broad range of colors.

Polyurethane varnishes can be either oil based or water-borne. The label on the product will specify which it is. Oil-based varnishes are better for use on kayak skins, as water-borne products do not adhere reliably to Nylon fabrics.
