I have no problem surfing here in Southern California with a GP. People seem to think the surf is all about using a paddle powerfully, but that's all wrong. It's really about kayak finesse, like leaning forward or backward, strong edging, location on the wave, and timing. So many people get hurt in the surf, because they power the paddle too much, especially when bracing. Sometimes it's just better to let the brace go, fall into the water, and do a little scull back up once things calm down. I did find the standard prescribed GP length for me, 88", was a bit long in the surf, went to an 84", and found out that length works better for me touring too.
