Launching: Successful testing of Mid Stern Skeg

I cut the original skeg out of my Illusion kayak and mounted a new smaller skeg offset in the day hatch. That was the day before heading off to Vancouver Island.

After 10 days in the Broken Group and 6 days in the Deer Group with a few days of 20 knot winds I am very pleased with the results. I can hold direction in all headings.

For surfing wind waves I could keep the power on without correcting strokes.

Kayak still responds to edging with the skeg down.

It has a different feeling than the stern mounted skegs because it does not lock up the stern. It is definitely a more subtle feeling.

Enough room in the day hatch to pack gear in aroung the skeg, and nice to have the space in the stern for gear.

Skeg is offset by 1.5" of the keel line, after hearing of Nicks successful offset installation.

I could get a measurement but I would estimate the rear of the skeg is about 25" to 28" behind the center of balance.

Not all my tinkering is successful, so I am very pleased with this.
