The coaming is aluminum 1/8 inch thick. It is not tempered. I found it locally in the Portland, OR area. After two attempts at steam bending I choose another material - Aluminum (I've steam bend successfully in the past - it was just a bad week).
The aluminum seems more than strong enough even for a larger coaming. I'll be trying it on a larger kayak later.

One major advantage to aluminum is that you can steam it forever and not worry about drying it out. :)
Seriously, it bent very easily abound my coaming jig (didn't even have to warm it up) and rivets together. The only downfall is it eats drill bits for lunch.

I also decided to attach fabric to the coaming separate from the deck and then connect the two. That way the coaming fabric could be cut on the bias and be stretchy. It fit the coaming much better that way. I think I would do the fabric on the coaming next time no matter what fabric or coaming I use. It is so much easier to work with.

: I think I noticed in the R2K9 photos that the coaming appears to be aluminum?
: Is that correct? If so, how well does it seem to work? And what thickness
: aluminum did you use?
