For what it is worth. I have used System Three Silvertip on two boats. One is a kayak that I have been paddling for three years. The other was a lapstrake (plywood S&G) canoe that was destroyed when a 30" diameter oak tree fell through it. I did not see any sign of expoxy shattering as you described.
