Strip: building the coaming

I'm at that stage of cutting out the cockpit, and building a coaming. My intent is to follow Vaclav's method - but finding 'bendable birch' is tougher than I'd anticipated. I'd like to use 1/8"; my local lumberyard will order in a doorskin, but the 'bend' runs 90 degrees to my interests - and it's $80. Seems a bit steep, but.... ? I'm familiar with using the cedar strips to build the riser, but the ply looks easier, and perhaps 'cleaner'. Menards laughed when I asked; maybe a hobbyshop? Ideas appreciated.
