Skin-on-Frame: dying nylon question

I just finished dying the skin. I have 1050 Denier and was using acid dye from skinboats. When I mixed the dye as per instructions and applied it to the skin it pretty much just rolled off (almost like the skin is waterproof). eventually it would be ablsorbed into the skin but the color is somewhat washed out and has a mottled look, which I am ok with. But I am wondering if this is normal? when I looked at the skinboats website the dye appears to be going on very well with nice deep color.
