I really didn't need the skeg but we've found it useful to adjust the trim of the boat in different wind, current and wave conditions so it tracks straight when paddling. Without it you have to keep the boat straight by either leaning the boat on one side a bit or by paddling more on one side than the other. My wifes boat, for some reason, tends to drift slightly to one side. The skeg helps with this too. My boats ended up weighing 42 pounds each.
