Think flat water and a boat that is super stable, with a big cockpit. 50# of dog with a very high center of gravity moving around in your boat can really play havoc with the stability. A canoe would probably be best for the larger beasts. My parents take their 110# shepherd/lab with them in their Old Town Loon 16. Even in such a bathtub of a boat they still need to be very careful if he starts moving around. He also likes to swim and used to jump out whenever he got the opportunity. He's dunked them a few times. They ARE quite the site. I've tried taking my 65# husky a few times in my Saco 12 rec boat (stable/big cockpit). She usually gets restless after a few minutes. My 80# samoyed was worse. You really need to start them off paddling when their puppies so they can get used to be cooped up in a boat for hours on end.
