Strip: What double design?

Having completed my Guillemot, I am being quietly urged to strip build a double for my son and grandson. They are age 35 & 230lbs, and a 2yr old todler, he'll be older by the time the build is complete. The boat would be used mainly on small inland waters.
I thought first about a microbootlegger, then wondered if stretching a Great Auk to say 18ft 6" and doing some calcs to position two cockpits might be a better option. A small amount of ballast under the little one could be added and decreased as he grows!
Is this a reasonable option? Has anyone tried it? Is there any other suitable route that I should consider? Thoughts please!
