It was oak. There were a couple things that contributed to it. I used three pieces to cover the whole length and not enough screws. For a lake boat, it was not necessary anyway. For my Wee Lassie canoe, I intend to do more streams where a full length will be more useful. I believe a thicker strip and only two pieces properly joined and well screwed down will do the trick to prevent warping.
The main reason why I intend to use wood is that its going to be a short boat and I want the thick keel strip to help with tracking. If I did not worry about tracking I would use another material. I've had good luck with another piece of fabric painted on and others have had luck with glue. Regardless a full length keel strip will probably to more to help with abrasion than anything else.
