: Hi,
: I'm building a Chesapeake 17 from a kit. As you know, you lay
: fiberglass tape on the fillets. Well, on one side of my tape,
: the factory edge isn't nice and flat but instead has a little
: ridge on it so it sticks up a bit, even when wetted out with
: epoxy. It doesn't stick up off the wood, but just not laying
: super flat. The little ridge is quite obvious (not to mention
: quite rough). Has anybody else experieced this? Any way around
: it? The tape looks kind of dumb when one side lays flat on the
: wood and the other side has a little ridge on it.
: Advice? Too late for this boat, but looking for advice for the next
: boat. (This is my practice boat, and believe me it's not going
: to win any awards! I knew going into this project, that if you
: want to do something RIGHT you have to do it TWICE!)

It's called "selvage". I trim it off with a well-sharpened wood chisel while the epoxy is still"green". That's when it's stiff enough to cut but not fully hardened.
