Strip: New method for placing "that last strip"

Just finished stripping my first kayak. Figured out on literally the very last strip, a new (new to me anyway) method of getting the last strip to fit just right. Since this was on the deck, I wasn't able to trace it from underneath. What I did was lay a piece of masking tape over the hole, draw the outline of the hole onto the masking tape, then put the masking tape onto the new strip to be trimmed, and all I had to do was cut/plane around the lines that I drew. Simple and easy...I'm sure this is nothing new, but I haven't seen it anywhere.
