An alternative to hanging the kayak - IF you have fore and aft hatches - is to use a couple of trestles (or stands), so you can rest the boat on them at the fore and aft hatch locations. Use a thinnish piece of hardwood as the cross-member. Varnish the deck first, with the hull resting on the cross-members; then, with the hatch covers removed, turn it over, rest the boat's hatch openings on the cross-members, and do the hull. You can wrap the cross-member stick with plastic sheeting to ensure nothing can stick. This is the technique we use in coating the VOLKSKAYAKs with multiple coats of epoxy - works like a charm...
