To be fair, those generation plans probably ARE the plans you (the OP) and your dad used :-). There's also some at Svenson's, or search for "King Canvasback" or "PlyYak". Backyard kayaks (rec boats) were built like johnboats, dinghies, and skiffs - plywood or planking on a lumberyard frame. A neighbor had one when I was a kid, and it was a great toy to play in on calm days, near the shore. Time marches on though. Chevy would be crazy to come out with the '57 Bel Air today, but it was a good car then.

Three things really advanced the state of the art (for homebuilt rec boats). The Skin on Frame evolved rapidly, leading to strong, light, sophisticated designs like Tom Yost's and Jeff's (Kudzu), using modern materials. Strip-built designs flourished (IMHO) because good design software came available, and because lots of people documented their builds and shared what they learned. Finally, folks figured out how to build build plywood-on-frame without the frame, aka Stitch and Glue. See Bateau.com or JEM Watercraft for some nice S&G designs.

PS - If you do go stitch and glue, google 'pirogue plans plywood'. Pirogues are simple, flat bottomed canoe-like boats for swamps, streams, and calm waters.
