:How big are you and how big is your son?

Rhino - 280 pounds, shoe - 13W - height - 6'0" - hip width ~22"
Little Monster - 70 pounds - shoe - 4 - height - 4'8" - hip width 20') and large ~4" diameter. I did see a skin on frame kayak framed with a large bamboo, split down and bent for ribs and the length.

If I were to build the Viking longship, I would build the keel and ribs (which look kind of like a wide wishbone) out of the foam. I would have to scarf the pieces for the keel. Laminating cardboard on each side of the foam would give it additional strength.
The ribs would knotch down over the keel. The boat would have a floor inside the wishbone adding rigidity. I would built the floor as close the keel as possible because it would be paddled like a kayak, not rowed by hairy, ale guzzling warriors. I could easily have a rib every couple of feet.

Here is where I fould the longship plans: http://www.sjolander.com/viking/plans/ I made a model from a foam board and paperboard with my son using these plans and it came out nicely. As I mentioned I would have to lower the center of gravity. Viking actually sat on their sea chests to row.

Would the bambo work for kayak strips? Could I use the fishing pole size full size, or would it be better to split the larger canes? The thinner ones eventually split.

Vikings had large round shields which were decorated in individual patterns and hung on the side of their longboats. Cardboard would be great for this project.

I thought that the roof coating would make a good base/ primer for the boat. Then I can get a colorful exterior latex paint.
