: frames from solid timber. Mine are mitre jointed and doweled
: using 3/16" x 1/2" pine strips with tiny bamboo
: dowels, so there's mostly no doubling of the timbers at joints
: (except where it made sense or I got lazy).

Has anyone tried a solid wood frame with doubled joints and weight-reducing circles cut out of the doubled joints? It's the overall width across the glued joint that contributes most of the strength and the wood and glue at the center doesn't do much. Should be both light and quick ...
