I carry my spare euro paddle INSIDE my stern hatch. There are those who will tell you that it's not as safe as having it on deck, but get real. I've heard more 'lost my spare paddle in the surf' incidents than 'spare paddle on deck is necessary' stories. The only time I lose grip of my primary paddle is when I've hooked a good fish while trolling, and I use a paddle leash then. A paddle in teh hatch is not as instantly accessible inside the hull, but that's what friends are for :-).

The only time my spare is on deck is when I'm on a multi-day journey and it won't fit.
