Hi AK, I had some of those HSS bits with solid pilots back in the 70's. Couldn't afford carbide but soon learned my lesson. You too I bet. They do work til they turn black.
I ordered the one from MCLS, 16 bucks and free shipping, so not too bad. Tools seem less expensive these days.
I see you're experienced with solo canoes. This is my first and am hoping to stay under 25 pounds. Wish we could have coffee or a few beers, I'd buy.

: The first round over bit I purchased did not have a pilot bearing,
: just a guide post about 1/8" dia. It was cheap, only HS
