I finish off outer stems with brass stem band, easy to find and looks great - especially when polished - but adds a bit of weight. The trick to getting brass to stay shiny is to varnish or lacquer it. Before applying the finish, remove the last trace of brass polish with a kleenex (paper towels can have slight traces of oil) and a little chalk dust or talc.
