As a first timer I agree too.

40 is going to scratch pretty deep. I used 80 with an ROS and then 120 and 180 with a fairing board, before light hand sanding with 180 in a block.

The ROS is fantastic for doing the bulk of the job. But it's very easy to end up with subtle valleys in the wood where it has been. The fairing board dealt with those and the light hand sanding polished out the last of the ROS scratches.
